The effects of periparturient diseases on reproductive performance have been reviewed.6 Dystocia, retained placenta, cystic ovaries, metritis, and any periparturient health problem were found to either directly or indirectly decrease reproductive performance. Because milk fever increases the relative risk of these important periparturient diseases, it indirectly, but predictably, decreases fertility.
