Abstract

PROBLEMS WITH ORAL REHYDRATION THERAPY AND FORCE-FEEDING IN THE YOUNG CALF

The introduction of oral glucose-electrolyte solutions (ORS) in the rehydration therapy in calf diarrhea is believed to be one of the most important advances in veterinary medicine in the past decades. However, own experiences and investigations with several hundred neonatal calves suffering from diarrhea or other diseases show that the use of such solutions - including so-called 'diet-drinks' - implies various risks, which have to be considered.
