Abstract

To examine all of the cattle in a herd is often not possible because of the cost involved and the principal decision before beginning the examination of a herd is to establish what the costs and benefits are likely to be and then to decide on a procedural pattern which will not sacrifice accuracy for speed and, on the other hand, will not spend unnecesary time accumulating unnecessary information. This paper is presented in order to provide some ground rules, some guidelines, for the field veterinarian faced with the task of examining a group of animals.
