Hygienic Practices Affecting Milk Quality and Mastitis on Larger Dairies

Abstract

Hygiene as practiced on the modern dairy plays a primary role in the production of high-quality milk and in reducing the incidence of the mastitic infections which are the major disease threat to dairy profits. For practical purposes, milking-parlor sanitation must be separated into three phases:
I. premilking sanitation
2. cleansing of the milking unit after each cow is milked, and reducing organisms on the milker's hands.
3. dipping teats in an effective germicide post-milking.
