Abstract

In cases of acute bovine mastitis, rapid treatment is essential to salvaging milk production in the affected quarter and often times in saving the life of the cow. Proper antibiotic therapy and other necessary procedures such as fluid therapy calcium administration must be instituted at the first sign of mastitis. Treatment success or failure is usually determined within the first twenty four hours of
onset of signs. Acute cases of mastitis in the bovine generally are caused by coliform organisms although staphylococci and streptococci may be involved occasionally.
