Abstract

Over the past 50 years, cattle prices have remained relatively stable and the cost of ordinary consumer goods has increased moderately, but the price of a veterinary education has skyrock­eted. The USDA’s Veterinary Medical Loan Repayment Program (VMLRP) and Veterinary Services Grant Program (VSGP) are well designed systems that incentivize veterinarians to practice food animal medicine in underserved, often rural, areas.
