This study was done on 325 dairy farms in Quebec, Canada to estimate S. agalactiae and S. aureus herd infection prevalence and their impact on milk production and quality. A maximum of 3 bulk tank milk sample were collected in each selected farm for bacteriology and somatic cell counting. A questionnaire for evaluation of farm management and mastitis control practices was administered during the first visit. The study reveals a herd infection prevalence for S. agalactiae and S. aureus of 43% and 93.4% respectively; 4.7% are negative to both bacteria. Adoption on a regular basis of teat dipping of all cows and blanket dry cow therapy is 60.8% and 34% respectively. The high prevalence results for S. agalactiae and S. aureus and the poor adoption of basic mastitis control practices give us a basis to improve upon with a mastitis control program.
