Abstract

Benefits and costs to be taken into account when making economic estimates of mastitis control are discussed. They include changes in milk production and feed consumption, treatment and control programme costs, culling and death losses due to mastitis and to other diseases, and changes in labour, milk composition and calving intervals. Evidence on the economic impact of mastitis control is reviewed and potential problems in estimating impacts for individual herds are discussed.
