Abstract

Johnes disease is a specific infectious enteritis of cattle, sheep, and goats. It is characterized by progressive emaciation, chronic diarrhea, and a thickened and corrugated wall of the intestines. Johnes disease is caused by the organism Mycobacterium paratuberculosis. It is strongly acid fast and also gram positive. Synonyms for the condition are bovine paratuberculosis or chronic bacterial enteritis.
