Abstract

400 Friesian cows were clinically examined 1 day after their 4th insemination. Diagnoses of management errors, anatomical defects, abnormal vaginal discharge, cystic follicles and delayed ovulation were made in 5, 19, 16, 10 and 2% resp. of cows, the remainder appearing to be clinically normal. The CR of clinically normal cows after their 4th insemination was 60%. The oestrous cycles of 14 of the clinically normal cows which failed to conceive after 5-7 inseminations, and 18 other clinically normal cows, were observed. Delayed ovulation occurred only twice in 116 cycles, and the cows involved ovulated normally at the next oestrus, without treatment. Seven cows conceived after insemination (22%) and only 14 cows failed to conceive after 2 periods of natural service (44%). Anatomical defects which could have prevented conception were found in 10 of the 14 cows.
