Abstract

The reproductive records of 9 dairies that used prostaglandin (Lutalyse [dinoprost] or Estrumate [cloprostenol]) for anoestrous cows were analysed to determine effectiveness of treatment. Anoestrous cows were treated if a corpus luteum was palpable. With 179 doses [not specified] given, 73% of treated cows were served within 10 days of treatment, and pregnancy rates did not differ from other services in the herds. A decision tree was used to determine cost effectiveness and the results varied with the assumptions. At a treatment cost of $2.50 and cost per open day of $2.00, treatment was cost effective. Treatment was most effective when heat detection efficiency was high.
