Abstract

Traditionally the conformation of cattle has been evaluated subjectively by lay individuals. Over the years this has lead to the selection of shape and size on the basis of aesthetics rather than "functional efficiency." The term "functional efficiency" is used by Bonsma (1973) and is best used when conformation is related to factors of economic importance such as fertility, susceptibility to disease, production, calvability and longevity.
