Abstract

A computer program for estimating the cost of milk losses due to bovine mastitis utilizes the somatic cell counts of individual cows in a programmable calculator. The program estimates the milk loss from the actual distribution of somatic cell counts in the herd and compares this with a projected distribution of 0-3 units in 90%, 4-7 units in 9%, and 8-15 units in 1% of cows.
