Abstract

Nasal swabs from 2-15 dairy calves (1-6 months old) in 20 herds, collected once in three sampling periods in one year were examined for viruses. Eight of 573 calves were positive for infectious bovine rhinotracheitis virus (IBRV) or parainfluenza-3 virus (PI-3V). Two herds had calves with PI-3V and one herd had calves with IBRV during the first collection (Feb-May). A fourth herd had 2 calves with IBRV during the second (June-Sept) collection. From this fourth herd PI-3V was isolated from a calf during the third sampling period (Oct-Jan). There was no evidence of respiratory disease at the time of sampling in calves studied.
